JNANA ASHTANGA & JNANA PANCHADASHANGA YOGAS

(RAJA YOGAS OF KNOWLEDGE WITH 8 LIMBS &
WITH 15 LIMBS)

WE HAVE COVERED CLASSIC ASHTANGA YOGA
(RAJA YOGA-YOGA WITH EIGHT LIMBS) IN THE
FOLLOWING POSTING ----

ASHTANGA YOGA
lhttp://athma-spiritualbliss.blogspot.in/2012/10/ashtanga-yoga.htm

IN JNANA ASHTANGA YOGA, THE NAMES OF THE
8 LIMBS REMAIN SAME BUT EXPLANATION OF THE
LIMBS IS DIFFERENTLY DEFINED BASED ON
KNOWLEDGE(JNANA) APPLICABLE TO THOSE LIMBS
& NOT BASED ON METHODICAL WAY.

SAME EXPLANATION MENTIONED ABOVE HOLDS
GOOD FOR JNANA PANCHADASHANGA YOGA
(YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE WITH 15 LIMBS) ALSO,
GIVEN IN THE BOOK 'JNANA SINDHU'.

THE LIMBS OF KNOWLEDGE MAY BE PRACTISED AT
ALL PLACES AND AT ALL TIMES

OF YOGA AND KNOWLEDGE, ONE MAY FOLLOW
WHICHEVER IS PLEASING TO ONE, OR BOTH,
ACCORDING TO CIRCUMSTANCES.

THE GREAT TEACHERS SAY THAT FORGETFULNESS
IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL, AND IS DEATH FOR
THOSE WHO SEEK RELEASE, SO ONE SHOULD REST
THE MIND IN ONE’S SELF AND SHOULD NEVER
FORGET THE SELF: THIS IS THE AIM.

JNANA ASHTANGA YOGA

(RAJA YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE WITH 8 LIMBS)

Eight Limbs of Jnana Ashtanga Yoga--
(YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE WITH 8 LIMBS)

1.

Yama(control of senses)

This is controlling the aggregate of sense-organs, realizing
the defects that are present in the world consisting of the
body, etc.

2.

Niyama(controlled disciplines)

This is maintaining a stream of mental modes that relate to
the Self and rejecting the contrary modes. In other words,
it means love that arises uninterruptedly for the Supreme Self.

3.

Asana(yoga Posture)

That with the help of which constant meditation on Brahman
is made possible with ease is asana.
(Please note that sitting in meditation posture is not essential here)

4.

Pranayama(controlled yoga breathing)

Rechaka (exhalation) is removing the two unreal aspects of
name and form from the objects constituting the world, the
body etc.

Puraka (inhalation) is grasping the three real aspects--
Existence, Consciousness and Bliss,
which are constant in those objects.

Kumbhaka(retention) is retaining those aspects thus grasped.

5.

Pratyahara(withdrawal of senses)

This is preventing name and form which have been removed
from re-entering the mind.

6.Dharana(concentration of mind on one object)

This is making the mind stay in the Heart, without straying
outward, and realizing that one is the Self itself which is
Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.

7.Dhyana(meditation)

This is meditation of the form ‘I am only pure
consciousness’. That is, after leaving aside the body
which consists of five sheaths, one enquires ‘Who am I?’,
and as a result of that, one stays as ‘I’ which shines as
the Self.

8.Samadhi(thoughtless state)

When the ‘I-manifestation’ also ceases, there is
(subtle) direct experience. This is samadhi.

General

For pranayama, etc., detailed here, the disciplines such
as asana, etc., mentioned in connection with yoga are
not necessary.

JNANA PANCHADASHANGA YOGA
(RAJA YOGA OF KNOWLEDGE WITH 15 LIMBS)
(YOGANGA LAKSHANA PRAKARANA OF JNANA SINDHU)

Parameshwara teaching Shanmuga

'Parameshwara teaching Shanmuga' postings are based on
'Jnana Sindhu' writings of great CHIDANANDA AVADHUTHA
of very high spiritual level based on VEDANTHA
(UPANISHATHS). He had given the copy of the book to the
parents of a future Avadhutha even before the baby was born,
telling parents Goddess will take birth as their son & to give
the book to the boy when he would be twelve year old, who is
destined to become an Avadhutha by name
AJATHA NAGALINGA SWAMY at NAVALAGUNDHA
in north Karnataka.

Shanmukha told Parameshwara --

Shanmukha folding his hands in reverence told Shamkara,
"I heard many types of yogas from you, please be kind enough
to teach me Jnana Raja Yoga & uplift me spiritually."

Parameshwara told Shanmuka--

My son ! compared to all yogas, all peace, all vasana kshayas
(latent impressions) root cause of which is that yoga which
shines by its own splendor is Jnana Raja Yoga.Because of its
greatness it has become famous as king of yogas --
ie.Raja Yoga. All other forms of yogas after observing their
drawbacks in their characteristics made this yoga as their
king. This Raja Yoga is like king, where as other yogas are
like only ministers.Raja Yoga is like main road(Raja Marga)
where as other yogas are like small, small side roads. Those
who follow this Raja Yoga reach Moksha kingdom safely.
Those who travel by side roads move forward with effort &
finally reach Raja Marga & then travels further.

My child ! I shall explain to you the path of JNANA Raja

Yoga which leads you in a pleasant state of mind.I shall
explain to you based on Shruthi(vedantha) only &
not without vedantha. My teaching will bring happiness to
Lord of yogas(GOD) & will explain clearly meaning of
vedantha which will be easy to understand.

Just like man is having limbs(angas),this yoga also has
limbs. If a person looses even one limb he looses the beauty
of his body, same way in this yoga if there is defect in one
limb, yoga gets spoiled.

This Raja Yoga of knowledge has 15 limbs. They are ---

1) Yama(control of senses)
2) Niyama(controlled disciplines)
3) Thyaga(Dispassion)
4) Mouna(Silence)
5) Desha(Place)
6) Kala(Time-here dream like vision)
7) Asana(yoga Posture)
8) Mula-bandha(blocking anus)
9) Deha-samya(balanced maintenance of body)
10) Drik-sthithi(eyes fixed on a point)
11) Pranayama(controlled yoga breathing)
12) Prathyahara(withdrawal of senses)
13) Dharana(concentration of mind on one object)
14) Dhyana(meditation)
15) Samadhi(thoughtless state)

1) Yama(control of senses)

Successfully controlling all senses & thinking what is seen
is Brahman only is Yama.

2) Niyama(controlled disciplines)

Without telling clean or dirty, without ego of cast, creed,

family, being free of opposing thoughts, forsaking ego
of actions is Niyama.

 3) Thyaga(Dispassion)

Forsaking company,attachment of wife,children,mother,

father, being free of illusion(bhrame), forgetting what is
favorable or not favorable, renouncing outside activities
being without all the above is Thyaga(Dispassion)

Without any company, thinking world what is seen is

like dream, forgetting outside activities is Thyaga.

Relinquishing all pleasures, without any hindrance,

being free of all problems, outward dispassion of highest
level is Thyga.

4) Mouna(Silence)

When my reflection is shown to me in the mirror & told

it is my reflection, is only a talk of unreal view, in reality
how I am seen, same way the world what is seen is my
form only, 'so with whom I can talk ?' thinking thus sadhak
(who practices Yoga) becomes Silent is Mouna.

Even Vedas unable to grasp the form of Brahman in

mind, returned back without any result, that which cannot
be explained by talk(anirvachaniya) 'there is no room for
argument' thinking thus becoming Silent is Mouna.

Yogis understanding this, finding no room for explanation,

Yogis become 'Child like' or 'Mad man like' or 'Ghost like'
states,(which we have covered in earlier postings) take to
silence(Mouna) & move about.

5) Desha(Place)

I am only spread out as all forests, mountains, caves, sacred

places, houses, temples, thinking thus 'for me any place is
good enough'  continuing to sit in the same place is Desha
(Place)

6) Kala(Time-here dream like vision)

This world which is seen by me, sports with me,merges in

me.This world is not separate from me. Creation(Sristi),
present state(Sthithi),destruction(Laya) are seen in me &
get merged in me, reason being this world is 'vision'
(unreal, dream like) only, understanding this is Kala

7) Asana(yoga Posture)

Behavior,talking,sitting,sleeping,eating,excretion of

filth, attention of mind, thoughtless mind - in all these
actions meditating on Soul(ATHMA) is Asana(posture)

8) Mula-bandha(blocking anus)

For unaccountable number of life forms, giving old age,

death, pushing them in ocean of life, executing power
play(Ieeias) which is MAYA - thinking as  myself is
Moola-Sambhandha(basic relationship).

9) Deha-samya(balanced maintenance of body)

Taking food,moving about, sleeping,practicing yoga,

carrying out these actions while maintaining body under
one's control is Deha-samya.

 10) Drik-sthithi(eyes fixed on a point)

What is Seen is drishya,
 instrument that Sees is drik,
action of Seeing is Drishti, these three are unreal & can
be destroyed, having capacity to understand this is by
Soul(Athma) alone which is Real, is Drik-sthithi.

 11) Pranayama(controlled yoga breathing)

Monastery(mutt),house,river,shore,thatched small house
ashrama(place where sanyasies live) etc.,pleasant places,
where a sense of tension free, happy state is generated
outwardly, thinking that as an illusion, not influenced, being
lazy is Pranayama.

This Pranayama has three parts, they are --
1) Rechaka (exhalation)
2) Puraka (inhalation)
3) Kumbhaka(retention)

1) Rechaka (exhalation) --
Many types of animals,house,wife,children-- leaving all of
them is Rechaka (exhalation).

 2) Puraka (inhalation) --
All the time being SAT-CHITH-ANANDA like a statue, being
without any characteristics, thoughtless mind,'I am Lord
Para Shiva' thus thinking is Puraka (inhalation).

3) Kumbhaka(retention)--
In this way thinking 'I am Brahman' repeatedly so much that
thought 'I am Para Shiva' becomes permanent is
Kumbhaka(retention)

12) Prathyahara(withdrawal of senses)

This body which is temporary, why should it be pleased &
looked after ?, thinking thus, offering everything to Athma
(Soul) & being unattached is Prathyahara.

13) Dharana(concentration of mind on one object)

Jagrath(Waking State), Swapna(Dream State), Sushupthi
(Deep Sleep state) -- in these three periods what illusion
seen is 'Para Shiva' only, thus thinking is Dharana.

 14) Dhyana(meditation)

"Hamsa: Soham Hamsa: Hamsa: Parama-Hamsa:" thus
being yourself Hamsa, doing Hamsa meditation all the
time is Dhyana.

15) Samadhi(thoughtless state)

At one time seeing myself, sensing this world & at another
time forgetting that, one time telling this  world is formless,
another time telling this world is form of Brahman, once
again forgetfulness of body, another time sensing body,
thus experiencing is Samadhi.

This way Raja Yoga has 15 limbs. If there is a shortfall
even in one limb, you cannot succeed in this yoga.

In this yoga mainly you should know difference of Drik
& Drishya. What is seen in front of you is called Drishya.
That which sees Drishya is called Drik.

Vision of body is seen by the limb(part) Drik.

White,bronze,brown,green etc. colours, huge,minute
objects, earth,mountains,river etc. views(Drishyas) are
seen by Nayana Drik(seen by eyes)
.
Vision of mirage, super imposition etc. are called
Mana Drik(seen by mind).

Vision of sorrow, love, attachment etc. enveloped by
mind vision are called Buddhi Drik(seen by intellect).

Parts of anthakarana which is one, are called Mana,
Buddhi-- two types. When you understand it is called
Buddhi, forgetfulness is called Mana. Paramathma(God)
who knows above knowledge & who is Sat-Chit-Ananda
is called as Mula Drik(origin-source that sees)

Drik other than seeing its own form, Mula Drik cannot
have one more Drik. The sentence "Mula Drik saw
Drishya(vision that is seen)" is covered by Upadhi
(limitation).Removing this Upadhi(limitation) &
seeing Mula Drik is through this Yoga.

My child ! for your sake I explained to you this RAJA YOGA
with 15 limbs elaborately. The Yogi who achieves this
RAJA YOGA as agreed by all sages, takes my form only.
This Yoga is the root cause for all things. For the mountain
of sins this Yoga is like Diamond which cuts through all
sins. This Yoga shines among all other yogas like KING !

For this Yoga, Shravana,Manana,Nidhidyasana * tools are
required. This Raja Yoga also requires SADHANA
CHATHUSTAYA. Now you analyze the 15 limbs of this
Yoga in your mind thoroughly.

This Yoga should not be told to showyi, showing off
outwardly high level of cleanliness without their mind
being clean, low level souls.-- told Shankara.
Hearing this Shanmuga became very happy & started
repeating in mind the 15 limbs of this RAJA YOGA !
